Tips for the Gifts in a Jar Maker

When giving a gift in a jar, you'll want to decorate it for the occasion - or just to make it look as good on the outside as the stuff on the inside of the jar. Now, don't let this keep you from doing one of these fun and easy gifts. Decorating the jar is fairly simple and doesn't have to cost much.

  • Use a simple ribbon to decorate your gift in a jar. Ribbons come on all shapes, sizes, fabrics and textures. Taking one and wrap it around the glass part of the jar at the base of the closed lid. Tie a nice bow or you can hang a charm or something from the knot.

  • Make a pillow top with fabric and batting on the top of your gift in a jar. You'll need a little batting or pillow stuffing, piece of fabric to fit the top with a little to hang over Cover the top of your gift in a jar with fabric. You'll need a circular piece of fabric, a rubber band and a ribbon or raffia. Cover the entire top of the jar and secure with the rubber band. Then tie the coordinating ribbon on top of the rubber band to hide it.

  • Painted jars make your gifts in a jar extra special. It is a great way to give a gift that shows off a local artist or to help a friend with a collect of jars, or like in this picture an 'all things in US flags' collection. (This flag jar below is from Our House Crafts.)

  • Glue on a label to the side of your gift jars. These are easily made with cardstock or computer labels. you can decorate it and print them out or use scrapbooking papers and decorate them by hand. I've done this often with jars I use to organize my crafts. I've made button jars using this method like the one pictured below. I used scrapbook paper and alpha stickers, then added buttons and ribbon to create a very crafty look.

  • Paint the lid and glue on a flower. The flower can be silk or a handmade paper flower.

  • Use colored cellophane around the outside of the jar. Tie around at the base of the lid and allow to pieces of cellophane to stand upward.

  • Decoupage your gift in a jar with colored tissue paper to make it look like a stained glass piece or with a picture to create a keepsake for those who receive the gifts. You will need to prepare the jar at least two days in advance for drying and re-applying time of the decoupage.

  • Tie on useful things for the recipe that is in the jar. For instance, a small wooden scoop for bath salts can be tied on with the tag and ribbon. This adds to the overall effect of the gift.

  • Is a child making the gifts in a jar? Decoupage a child's drawing, use stickers or have them make a handprint in paint right on the jar(Careful! This kind of paint doesn't come out of clothes.)

Note: with each one of these ideas you will need to attach a tag. Using the ribbon in your decorated jar design or adding a small piece of ribbon or string is usually how one does this. But you can try new ideas like attaching the directions to the side of the jar with glue.
