Many of the gifts in a jar recipes can be made with colorful layers of the recipes ingredients. But some of the ingredients can be heavy than the others, thus they mix when transported and the layered look goes out the window! Here are some tips you can use to layer your gifts in a jar so they stay that way until your gift recipient mixes the recipe themselves.
Mix together the light ingredients before placing them in the jar. For instance, the flour, baking soda and salt can all be mixed before putting them in the bottom of the jar.
Pack down your ingredients with the bottom of a cup or ladle. Air can get in between the layers, so this is important to do between layering.
If you have any brown sugar in the recipe, use that to put between flour and any candy or nuts in the jar.
I find white sugar works best at the very bottom, otherwise it covers the nuts, candies or oatmeal.
If a colored layer is thin, push it out to the sides of the jar so it can be seen more. Then fill the hole with a less colorful layer.
Add layers with more air space in them - like candy, oatmeal, nuts, chocolate chips - at the top of the jar.
Experiment with the different ways to layer your gifts in a jar. You may like one way better than another but you won't know it until your try it both ways.
